So many of the products we use to clean our homes are full to the brim with nasty chemicals. They are seriously toxic, harming us when we breathe them in and harming the environment once they swirl down our drains and enter into our plumbing systems, then streams, lakes, and oceans.
What can we do about it? Purchase non-toxic cleaning supplies of course! Here's a quick guide to some of my favorites.
Seventh Generation is a fantastic company. Pictured here is their All Purpose Cleaner, which I like to use in my kitchen and bathrooms. You should definitely check out Seventh Generation's website. They have so many great products from paper towels to toilet bowl cleaners to baby diapers.
Simple Green's Car Wash is a great non-toxic, biodegradable solution perfect for getting that caked on dirt off your poor, neglected automobile. Plus, I think there's nothing sexier than a woman getting out there and washing her own car. Simple Green is also another interesting company, although their products tend to skew to the industrial side. Ideal if you have an office or business that needs a deep, green clean.
Ever worry about your plastic kitchen bags not breaking down once they're shuffled off to the land fill? Try BioBag's Certified Compostable Kitchen Bags. Just make sure you recycle all your non-biodegradable waste (plastic bottles, styrofoam, etc.) and be assured that one day soon all your 'trash' will disappear, including the bag!
Mountain Green's Free and Pure Laundry Detergent is biodegradable and made from vegetable based surfacants. It is phosphate free, dye free, and nonylphenol ethoxylate free. All nasty chemicals found in most laundry detergents which not only can mimic estrogen in the human body (NPE), but also kill off fish as they enter the water supplies.
Remember, being a conscious consumer extends to all aspects of our lives. Make a start today by reading your labels and being aware of what you buy. You matter - make a difference!
